Mob Expert Picks Top Mob Stories of 2011

Joseph Massino/gov photo

Mob Expert Picks Top Mob Stories of 2011- As New York mobster stories go, there seemed to be no shortage in 2011. Mob expert Jerry Capeci should know.
Capeci, a former New York Daily News reporter, runs the website Gang Land News. On Thursday, he picked the top mob stories of 2011.
Hands down, he writes, the top story was the Mafia Takedown arrests of 127 wiseguys and “various cohorts.”
Though Capeci picks the massive takedown in January as the top mob story of the year, he is not without some skepticism.
On the day of the announcement, Capeci writes that the “feds put on an overblown dog and pony show at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Brooklyn in a pretty transparent effort to send a message to mobsters that they were still a top priority of the federal government.”

'Ndrangheta laundering money in Germany

Berlin – Italian mafia organisations are investing billions of euros into Germany to hide their profits from the Italian authorities, organized crime experts said in Berlin on Friday.

“Germany is one of the most important sanctuaries, if not the most important,” Italy’s top anti-mafia lawyer Alberto Cisterna told German Press Agency dpa.

Since German reunification 20 years ago, he said former East Germany had become a key area for Italian mafia organizations to launder their profits.

Cisterna was part of an Italian delegation meeting German investigators in Berlin for a conference on ways of tackling organised crime.

Laura Garavini, a mafia expert in Italy’s Democratic Party, said eastern Germany was particular popular with the ‘Ndrangheta organisation from Italy’s southern Calabria region.

“In the first few years, when the east drew capital from all sorts of directions and nobody paid too much attention where it was coming from, the mafia channelled investments into real estate, tourism and the restaurant business,” Garavini said.

German investigators have also traced ‘Ndrangheta money to the Frankfurt stock exchange.

Cisterna said the mafia bosses presented themselves in Germany as serious businessmen, when in fact they were laundering money.

“If they pay 700,000 euros (860,000 dollars) into the bank each day, nobody suspects a thing if they own, say, a supermarket – even if it does not sell anything,” the lawyer said, adding that Germany’s prosperity made the country ideal.

“The best place to hide a grain of corn is in a corn shed,” Cisterna added.

Garavini said the mafia felt safe in Germany, in the assumption that it would be harder to confiscate their assets outside of Italy. She appealed for lawmakers to make use of a new EU regulation which enabled investments to be seized abroad.

Doing so had helped to fight the mafia in Italy, Garavini told

Louis A. "Bobby" Manna,Genovese crime family.

Louis A. "Bobby" Manna (born December 2, 1929, Hoboken, New Jersey), is a New Jersey mobster and former consigliere of the Genovese crime family.
Manna was a close associate of family boss Vincent "the Chin" Gigante; he rented an apartment in Greenwich Village, New York to be close to Gigante's headquarters at the Triangle Social Club. Louis stands at 5'8" and weighs 155 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes

. However, Manna's power base was in New Jersey. He supervised four caporegimes while also serving as consigliere. He ran his personal criminal operations out of an Italian eatery called Casella's in Hoboken, New Jersey.

With the March 1981 murder of Angelo Bruno, boss of the Philadelphia crime family, the family's territory in New Jersey suddenly became open. Manna became the lead man for the Genovese family in discussions with the Gambino crime family on how to equitably divide up that area. Up until his conviction he lived in Bricktown, New Jersey.

In 1987, Manna because pushing the Genovese family to murder John Gotti, the new boss of the Gambino family. A Gambino capo, Gotti had arranged the murder of Gambino boss Paul Castellano in 1985 and taken control of the Gambino family without the approval of the other four New York crime families.

Manna was especially unhappy about Gotti's unsanctioned coup against Castellano. In addition, Gotti wanted to take the lucrative South Jersey holdings that used to belong to the Philadelphia family and leave the less desirable North Jersey territory to the Genovese family.Unfortunately for Manna, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had bugged Casella's and was listening to Manna's conversations about killing Gotti. Following Bureau policy, they notified Gotti about the planned hit and gave their evidence to prosecutors. In 1990, Manna was convicted of racketeering and conspiring to murder Gotti and his brother, Gene Gotti.

As of March 2009, Manna is incarcerated in the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Fairton in New Jersey. His projected release date is February 20, 2056, effectively life without parole.
