Mob Expert Picks Top Mob Stories of 2011
Joseph Massino/gov photo
Mob Expert Picks Top Mob Stories of 2011- As New York mobster stories go, there seemed to be no shortage in 2011. Mob expert Jerry Capeci should know.
Capeci, a former New York Daily News reporter, runs the website Gang Land News. On Thursday, he picked the top mob stories of 2011.
Hands down, he writes, the top story was the Mafia Takedown arrests of 127 wiseguys and “various cohorts.”
Though Capeci picks the massive takedown in January as the top mob story of the year, he is not without some skepticism.
On the day of the announcement, Capeci writes that the “feds put on an overblown dog and pony show at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Brooklyn in a pretty transparent effort to send a message to mobsters that they were still a top priority of the federal government.”

Lindsay Lohan Will Be In Gotti Movie After All
Yesterday, it seemed like negotiations had ended between producers of the upcoming film, Gotti: The Three Generations and Lindsay Lohan. Previously, Lindsay was in talks to play Victoria Gotti, and a photograph of the two of them standing next to each other indicated a good match was found. As to the reason why Lindsay was no longer in consideration for the part, producer Mark Fiore told People that they just couldn't reach terms. Then, he told TMZ, "I will only ride a merry-go-round with my kids," indicating the possibility that Lindsay became too much to handle. But today, it has been announced that Lindsay will, in fact, appear in the movie, but this time she'll fill the role of Kim Gotti, the wife of John Gotti Jr. Of Lindsay's casting, Fiore told People, "She was definitely out as of earlier...but she really wanted the part. She not only is back in the movie, but she single-handedly put it all together. She called me personally and put her team on it and we came to an agreement." - People

San Francisco crime family
The San Francisco Crime Family was formed after a large gang war, which started in 1928 and ended in 1932. The Lanza gang proved to be the strongest gang after murdering San Francisco gang leader Luigi Malvese on May 18, 1932. Francesco Lanza was the leader of the Lanza gang and became the first real crime boss of San Francisco. He divided his income from loansharking, gun running, prostitution, gambling and narcotics. Lanza founded the famous Fisherman's Wharf along with his partner Giuseppe Alioto. Lanza passed away of natural causes on July 14, 1937. He was 57 years old.
Anthony J. Lima
Anthony J. Lima was succeeded as the next crime boss following Lanza's death. Lima was involved in the murder of Chicago mobster Nick DeJohn. It was believed that Lima and his underboss, Michael Abati, ordered his murder. On April 27, 1953 Lima was sentenced to the California State Prison for grand theft. Lima lost control of his crime family and was replaced by Abati.
Michael Abati
Michael Abati took over as boss in 1953. As boss he attended the famous Apalachin mob convention. There, dozens of top mobsters from accross the country had attended a failed crime meeting. The media attention given to La Cosa Nostra as a result of the meeting settled down but picked up again in 1963 when Joseph Valachi, a soldier in the Genovese crime family agreed to cooperate with the federal government. Abati was deported to Italy on July 8, 1961. He died of natural causes on September 5, 1962.
James Lanza
James Lanza would rise to become the most successful don the San Francisco mob ever had. He was well connected in Las Vegas by his friend William "Bones" Remmer, a Jewish associate with ties to the Genovese crime family of New York. Remmer was Lanza's link to Las Vegas. Lanza became wary of the serious damage that defectors could cause and took precautions against the risk of turncoats like Joseph Valachi. As a result, he brought very little new blood into the San Francisco mob as the membership aged. Lanza paved the way for Los Angeles family capo Aladena Fratianno to open operations based out of San Francisco. He later told Los Angeles crime boss Dominick Brooklier that he wanted Fratianno out of the Bay Area. It was over Fratianno bringing heat to the San Francisco mob. Fratianno would later testify against mobsters in California, Ohio and New York. Lanza was suspected of giving permission for the murder of former New England family associate Joseph Barboza in 1976.
Later YearsEdit
By the start of the 90's, there were only a few made men left in the San Francisco mob, one was Sergio Maranghi, who was involved in cocaine and heroin trafficking. Maranghi moved to the United States from Florence, Italy in 1975 and eventually settled in San Francisco in 1978. He first began working as an employee of Starfish Co., a small fish processing company, which did a lot of business with Alioto's Restaurant. In 1980 Maranghi opened the Anchor Bay Cafe in North Beach. Lanza quickly noticed Maranghi's ability as a money maker and soon made him a member of the crime family. Maranghi was spotted many times meeting with Lanza and other San Francisco mob figures at the Anchor Bay Cafe until it closed down in 1983. He was one of many involved in a cocaine bust in October 1991. Maranghi decided to become an FBI informant instead of facing a long prison sentence and told federal agents of cocaine transactions he had with his associates over a period of several years. Another man arrested was Gaetano Balistreri, a San Francisco mob soldier, who owned the Portifino Cafe on Colombus Ave. Balistreri was arrested for distributing cocaine but the charge was eventually dropped. In 1994, the San Francisco Police raided the Portifino and arrested Balistreri again. This time for running an illegal gambling operation with video poker machines. Another member still living at the time was Steve Trifiro, who ran a small gambling operation in Sacramento, CA. On February 14, 2006 Lanza died of natural causes at the age of 102.

Wanna Join The Mob? First Take Your Clothes Off says Bingy Arillotta,
Getting naked as an initiation ritual for fraternities we knew about—but getting naked as an initiation ritual for the mafia? Better than "wildings" on Easter, we guess. Gangland sub. required] reports that recent court testimony has confirmed that the Genovese crime family started stripping their inductees back in 1989 after the feds had secretly taped one of the family's inductions.
The story comes from the testimony of Anthony “Bingy” Arillotta, 42, who told jurors in Massachusetts he'd stripped down to his underoos for The Family one morning in August, 2003, after meeting at the Nebraska Steakhouse in the Bronx:

Frankie Roche, admitted killer of mob boss Adolfo Bruno, tells jury of history of brutal behavior
NEW YORK - Frankie A. Roche, the admitted shooter in the 2003 contract murder of crime boss Adolfo "Big Al" Bruno in Springfield, Mass., conceded on the witness stand that in his life, he has been a chronic and impulsive boozer, has viciously beaten total strangers, has taken a 17-year-old date on a high-speed police chase through central Massachusetts as she screamed in terror, and shot Bruno in cold blood without even breaking a sweat.
That said, he still proved to be an unflappable witness for the government in an ongoing mob murder trial in federal court in Manhattan.
"Did you hesitate when you pulled the trigger?" Geas defense attorney Harvey Fishbein asked on cross-examination
Nope," answered Roche.
"You weren't nervous, were you?" the lawyer asked.
"Nope," Roche responded mildly
'You ever killed somebody before?" Fishbein continued. "First time? Your hands weren't even a little sweaty? Heart beating a little faster?"

Mob-busting ex-FBI agent Lindley DeVecchio rips Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes' office in new book
Mob-busting former FBI agent Lindley DeVecchio beat a murder rap in 2007 – and now he’s settling a few scores in a new book.
DeVecchio, who was accused of advising Colombo crime family mob informer Greg Scarpa to whack four turncoats, says the Brooklyn district attorney’s office was bamboozled by convicts who hoped DeVecchio’s downfall would help their appeals.

Two Lucchese mobsters plead guilty
Two Lucchese crime family mobsters pleaded guilty today to federal racketeering charges.
Carlo Profeta, a Lucchese acting captain, and Eric Maione, a Lucchese associate, both pleaded guilty in Brooklyn federal court to one count each of a racketeering charge related to the use of extortion to collect a gambling debt.
Assistant US Attorney Rachel Nash said during the court hearing that Profeta, 68, and Maione, 34, could face in theory up to 20 years in prison when they are sentenced.
But the two mobsters are expected to receive reduced prison terms after deciding to plea guilty to the charges instead to going to trial when they are eventually sentenced by Judge Eric Vitaliano.

Feds; mafia no longer top priority
John Marzulli, daily news. The FBI'S New York bureau has downsized its organized-crime squads just two months after its massive gangster takedown.
There had been a separate squad of agents assigned to probe each of the city's five families.
A reorganization of the mob section, first reported by the website Gangland News, has led to a merger of the Bonanno and Colombo squads - and the Luchese squad teaming up with a unit investigating Eastern European crime crews.
In all, the number of FBI agents dedicated to busting organized crime dropped to 45.
The formidable Genovese and Gambino crime families still merit their own FBI squads, sources said.
"We're continuously re-evaluating how to assign resources, and the recent changes are designed to prevent inroads made by emerging crime groups," said FBI spokesman James Margolin.
Still, former organized crime-busters fear the changes will lead to a resurgence of the Mafia, noting that the Bonanno family rose from ashes a generation ago after it was decimated by undercover FBI agent Joseph Pistone.

Italy: Luxury 'Mafia' beach hotel impounded south
- Italian police on Wednesday impounded a luxury hotel in southern Italy that investigators contend is owned by a clan from the country's most powerful and wealthy mafia network - the 'Ndrangheta.
Police from the southern Calabria region early Wednesday raided the Parco dei Principi hotel in the town of Marina di Gioiosa Jonica. Investigators believe that beach hotel belongs to the Coluccio crime family, even if it is registered under another name.
The hotel, advertised as "five-star" accommodations, is valued at 11 million euros, according to a police statement.
Seven people associated with the hotel are under investigation for money laundering and fraud, in relation with public financing.
A person who answered the telephone at the hotel couldn't immediately say if guests and reservations will be affected by the police raid.
The 'Ndrangheta is the mafia organisation from the Calabria region. http://www.adnkronos.com/IGN/Aki/English/Security/?id=3.1.1625620092

Hollywood Goodfella-mob sweep on Staten Island
Suspects in mob sweep led to arraignments Major mob bust nets 22, including 2 Island business owners. Alleged Gambino capo Carmine Scianda, 57, of Eltingville, who co-owns three popular Top Tomato stores with his family, ran the operation which loaned victims money at exorbitant rates, prosecutors charge. The cash allegedly was fronted by Benedetto (Benny) Casale of Todt Hill, owner of Bulls Head-based Casale Tile.
Victims were threatened with violence if they didn't pay, said authorities.
The pair were among 22 people arrested, including 11 borough residents, for a series of wide-ranging schemes that also included a reputed Luchese crime family loan-sharking and bookmaking operation run out of the Night Gallery, a New Dorp bar.
Click here for a press release from Cuomo's office detailing the charges.
Here is video of the key suspects being led to their arraignment this morning.

Hollywood Goodfella: Exclusive: I know who killed gangster Kevin ‘Gerbil’ Carroll, says jailed assassin
http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/2010/01/16/exclusive-i-know-who-killed-gangster-kevin-gerbil-carroll-says-jailed-assassin-86908-21971601/
GANGLAND assassin Raymond Anderson yesterday denied he was behind the death of Kevin "The Gerbil" Carroll.
And, in a jail interview, Anderson, 47, pointed the finger at the Lyons underworld clan.
He said Carroll - an enforcer for the rival Daniel family - was gunned down in revenge for a bungled hit on a Lyons gang member.
And he rejected claims that Carroll, 29, was killed outside an Asda superstore for informing on him and James McDonald over the 2006 slaying of underworld figure Michael Lyons.
At Shotts jail in Lanarkshire - where he is serving 35 years for Michael Lyons's murder - Anderson said he only learned the Gerbil was dead when he phoned his daughter half an hour after news of the shooting emerged on Tuesday.
Veteran actor Anthony Borgese of "Sopranos" and "Goodfellas" fame pleaded guilty Wednesday to extorting a debtor who was beaten by mob goons.
